Matt Perez:
FBI acting chief in El Paso at the time Acosta was discovered to be in
hiding in a Rio Grande village, Matt Perez directed the American side of
the operation against Acosta. With a U.S. army helicopter full of
FBI agents, Perez escorted the Mexican assault force 300 miles through
U.S. territory. The tactic took Acosta and his gunmen by surprise
and Acosta was killed after an hour-long machine-gun battle that reminded
the FBI agents, many of them Vietnam veterans, of the action the had seen
in the military.
